Dr. S. M. Balaji was invited by Honorable Saumyamoorthi Thondaman, then Minister of Lifestock Development and Estate Infrastructure, Government of Sri Lanka, in January 1996. Dr. Balaji met with the Honorable Minister and had detailed discussions with him regarding improving healthcare standards of the Tamil people in the tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya. Impressed by his expertise and dedication, the Honorable Minister recommended him to the then Health Minister, Government of Sri Lanka, Honorable A. H. M. Fowzie who then appointed Dr. S. M. Balaji as the Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon of the province.
